Why We Love Puppies

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

What is it about puppies that make us feel everything is good in life?

To begin with, it’s a set up. We purposely pursue feelings that we know we enjoy.

Puppies take us to an emotional joy where love is unconditional

How often do we have the excuse to talk like we do when we are oogling someone’s cute new dog?

I saw a 3 month old boxer the other day that I think I would have taken in a heartbeat. I have always wanted a boxer and this epitomized the feelings.

We love the innocence. What is happier and friendlier than a puppy? They love you unconditionally. Tell me, how many people love you unconditionally? Even your kids have big conditions. Your mate has big conditions. Dogs don’t and especially puppies.

You realize they just ache to picked up and held and they want to lick your face. Even my best lines never got that immediate of a reaction.

We are immediately connected to Mother Nature. Only life can deliver something this precious.

When you grab their little chins and they jump on you like their long lost cousin, your whole face breaks into a great smile.

You tell yourself you want the puppy right now. How many things requiring so much care would make you commit that fast? I spend a lot more time than that in the store  committing to the coffee I want to buy.

It’s an immediate connection to the best that is in you and you know it.

If you could feel that several times a day, you would be a better person; we all would.

How many things take you to that place in yourself that fast?

If we felt that way about each other, we would all be happier.

If nations could be bonded like that we could work out our conflicts and trade so much easier.

The world needs more puppies.

Can We Leave the Pain and Sadness Behind?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

As I have cut out TV and football, I find I have more time to myself.  I do run into times in the evening when I would normally turn on a football game and let it take over my mind.                          KatandJulia

Now I happily wonder what I should do with my time. Saturday and Sunday I spent more time outdoors and actually started planning some train trips around San Diego.

In the evenings, I find I have turned to my old friend music and have discovered SongArea.com where there is hardly anything in the last 50 years they have not digitally re mastered and made better than new.

I even listened to Phantom and Les Misrables each of which I have seen several times.

But I also wandered into the favorites I used to sing in my youth.

Then I listened to the Neil Diamond songs I used to dance my oldest daughter to sleep with when she was a baby. Now she’s 24 and living in London where I can’t see her often. I actually cried when I heard my favorite with Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond singing “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore.”  I think I had happy and sad memories crashing together.

She’s the middle one in the picture. The same happens to her where there is the happiness of remembering and the sad of so much passing under the bridge.

I also took my daughter and her sister through a divorce which led to lots of heartbreaking times and feelings of separation and abandonment.

I feel very happy these days because I have gone through so much and I feel I can finally get my personal perks and self expression time. But what do I hide that I haven’t given myself room to contemplate because I can get passionate about the football and other TV pablum?

Maybe now I am on the road to finding out. Should we actually seek out the bad or sad memories?  I think not. But should we hide from anything that might be lurking beneath our eloquent busy ness that may seek to keep all those feelings suppressed?

I am continuing my journey to find out more about me by taking more off my plate and letting more new stuff in. My brain has never forgotten a single moment of my life.  By having no fear about what will come up and even giving it the opportunity maybe I can keep scraping down to the visceral where I have no fear of who I am and what I think.

Dealing with my demons and dark places will certainly bring light to my soul even if I have to go through some teary and regretful thoughts. I think it is worth it.

Try taking some things off your plate and opening up to what comes in.

How Much Passion Do You Need to be Out of Your Mind?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Bruce Willis at a Live Free or Die Hard (Die H...
Image via Wikipedia

I can almost hear the line in a movie. A frenetic protagonist is working feverishly at accomplishing a feat and a loved one is asking “Who Are You”?  Bruce Willis would be a good star in this movie.

What compels people to “go out of their minds” in pursuit of something they deem important. The Bruce Willis characters are often people outside of normal frameworks. He is an exaggeration of types which is what usually makes his movies interesting.

In Armageddon, he was a rich man of principal and responsibility that had family with his workers and a daughter and future son in law. He just had to sacrifice his life to save the world.

In Last Man Standing he was isolated from the human race in his job and estranged from his family as he pursued his own code.

The one common characteristic in most of his movies is a passion. That is why he is interesting in the roles. We are interested to see just what a man that is out of his mind with a passion for achieving what must be done is willing to go through.

We live vicariously through his pain, suffering and eventual triumph. This is often the point of movies. Create a character that has incredible obstacles but never quits on the road to reaching his goal and maybe becoming a hero. In Australian movies they often die. It is the point of movies; a protagonist, an antagonist, a goal, set backs, and a conclusion.

Why do we go to the movies to live vicariously for this enviable passion? Why are so many people bored? How do we make the connection between our lives and the movies we love?

We don’t risk going out of our minds to reach our own meaningful goals. Where’s the passion? Where’s the risk, the courage, the willingness to put it all on the line?

Ahh, maybe therein lies the answer. What are we willing to risk to find out just who we are and what we are made of? The reptilian mind has too strong a role. It warns us about dangers to our body and our psyches. The lizard has us by the throat.

We are very concerned about how we are perceived, what people think about us. Others opinions are either the purpose of our pursuits or guide our pursuits. We live in their worlds not necessarily our own.

We color inside the lines. This is a wise safe course. We don’t rock the boat and we abide by the rules. It usually works out for an orderly meaningful life.

But doesn’t there seem to be a lot of alcohol and drug abuse, crime, divorce, obesity, disease, and conflict in our civilization? Is that inside or outside the lines?

There might be too much emphasis on painting inside the lines and not enough emphasis on pursuit of meaningful passion and self expression. What we are suffering from is being too tied up in living by others’ expectations and not enough exploration into who we really are. That might be more excitement than we could handle. That’s why we leave it to super heroes.

We need to passionately express ourselves and pursue goals that have outrageously wonderful consequences. Hitting obstacles and over coming them is what the movie would look like if we were starring in our own. Let’s get a little of Bruce Willis cooking in our libidos.

Things That are Good for the Brain

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
A chimpanzee brain at the Science Museum London
Image via Wikipedia

Very few of us earn a living from brawn any longer.

We need rational power, emotional power, creativity, and inspiration.

In any case, these are the powers that also give us the most enjoyment from life. We are social beings and being social is what gave rise, according to scientists, the limbic and neo cortex brains that set us apart from animals about 100,000 years ago. Beta and alpha waves power the left and right hemispheres of the neo cortex.

The brain has energy. The energy has waves powered by chemicals. The various hertz levels of the waves determine whether our brain is in overdrive, balanced, or in need of stimulus.

We tend to have a sense of how our brains are working and use consumption to alter the brain waves which changes our states of mind as we often call them.  Beta waves are energized by Dopamine but the by product is adrenaline.

We enjoy coffee in the morning because the caffeine stimulates the Beta waves we need for rational and logical thinking and the feeling of being on top of our situation. We like alcohol often to slow down the over active Beta waves of stress so that we can get into a socializing state.

The alpha waves stimulate the right side of the brain that is most responsible for the external body stimulations and their interpretation by the brain. They mediate our conscious sensual experiences. They regulate the rate of sensory information coming at us.

Too much incoming unregulated stimulus can throw us into an “emotional” state. Death or betrayal are two stimulus we know that can take us out of the rational and into the emotional states, but there are many events in between.

The Beta wave state is like living in a vital active city and the Alpha wave state is like being in the beautiful countryside with the constant physical sensations of hearing birds singing, feeling the warm sunshine and the sounds of a babbling brook.

We enjoy chocolate because it has a soothing affect on the emotional limbic brain. Over eating also has a soothing affect of the limbic brain which is fueled by the Alpha waves. Marijuana also drops us into the settling alpha wave states where we revel in the sensual stimulus.

So manipulating these waves seems to be important to us. There are positive acts we can perform that stabilize the brain on a daily basis and eliminate some of the strong manipulations which frequently have bad and often long term side affects

Exercise both anaerobic and aerobic is critical to stabilize Beta waves. Even a half hour every other day will contribute. Foods that stimulate dopamine are broccoli, carrots, egg whites, salmon, pomegranate juice, spinach, and raw almonds. Teas can stimulate dopamine like green tea along with herbs spices and foods such as flax seed, garlic, and onion.

When dopamine is stimulated you are on top of the world and tend to be very social and in control. When dopamine is not positive, you tend to get involved in personal absorption with food, TV, hobbies, and so forth. Positive dopamine is socializing and negative is isolating.

Lack of alpha activity can create the inability to process our sensations. It can also lead to forgetfulness, difficulty with deadlines, inability to maintain a schedule, or having increased anxiety or stress.

When alpha waves are deficient, there is not enough mental speed to connect your thoughts and sensations together. Acetylcholine is the chemical that powers alpha waves. People who talk and think fast are demonstrating how acetylcholine works.

Exercise is also crucial for alpha support. Foods that support alpha wave balance are avocado, cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, nuts, milk products, eggs, luncheon meats, beef, olive oil and salad dressings. Yes a lot of fat based foods. They deliver a choline boost to our brains .

Water is of course a no brainer. Meditation is the practice of allowing our brains to synchronize. Giving the brains a rest by unplugging everything allows the waves to move into a balanced peaceful state.

Getting better brain balance is a good reason to fill our diet with supportive foods and therefore remove foods that are not helping us.

Healthy Eating and Exercise Lead to Success

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Success can have many meanings.

Feeling great would mean to me a very successful living style and attitude.

Feeling healthy would mean a very successful personal care commitment.

Feeling inspired would mean success at realizing who you are and why you are here.

Feeling energetic would mean success in creating healthy and happy behavior.

If you had all these attributes, wouldn’t it be easier to be successful in your job, avocation, raising a family, maintaining a relationship, or expressing who you are?

Care of the mind, body, and spirit is fundamental to creating success in anything important to you. If you wanted to win the Indy 500, wouldn’t you pay a lot of attention to your car? Your motivation for winning might be noble, but the vehicle to get you there must be in top condition.

Healthy Eating and Exercise are more than taking care of your body. They grow your spirit. Spirit overcomes obstacles. Spirit creates support from everything that could influence your outcome.

Healthy eating and exercise is a reflection of who you are and the value you place on your own life.  It reflects an understanding that you can’t love others until you first love yourself. Loving yourself also implies you understand your own perfection and that you have entitlements to be here and be happy.

Healthy eating and exercise could be the result of your attitudes or they could start building your attitudes.

Notice often when a man gets a new car he wants to wash and wax it. Is he waxing it so it will go faster? Usually it’s in appreciation for the car’s nice appearance and he wants to enhance it and make the appearance last.

When we take care of our body we are enhancing both our mind and our spirit as well. We are showing pride and appreciation that we are still above ground and would like to stay that way. We have realized that when we feel better, we think better. If we feel and think better, we probably have more energy.

Energy makes us appreciate more and have confidence we can accomplish more. Then we get into a spiritual realm of appreciating our capabilities and wondering what we might be capable of achieving for our families or even for a more global audience.

Feeling great expresses us. Expressing who we are fulfills our purpose. Paying more attention to who we are and less on what we should own or what is happening around us has rewards. True contribution has to start from within the contributor.

Why We Need 5 Hour Energy Drinks

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Especially after lunch.

That is because our digestion is taking the blood our brain needs.

It’s almost that simple.

The food we eat has to be digested. Digestion can require up to 65% of our energy.

If we are eating sugar and flour and fat and fried food our system has to work hard and is getting ingredients that hurt metabolism and rob our energy.

On the other hand if we are eating natural foods, they sail right through the digestive system and we don’t even notice. Our body is getting natural sugars and fat burning food and metabolism boosters.

Our digestion is not robbing the brain of blood it needs to think brilliantly.

Some foods support the Beta and Alpha waves that create brain energy. What we also do to manipulate these waves is drink coffee, smoke, drink soda, reach for a donut or candy bar to get a temporary boost in brain waves.

When we eat right we have better balanced Beta waves supporting our rational and logical thinking. We have better balance supporting our Alpha waves supporting our creative thinking.

The next thing Beta and Alpha waves need is a half hour of aerobic exercise at least every other day. An exercise routine makes us feel good, but energizes our blood and our brains.

If you really want to synchronize and balance your brain you would meditate a little each day or every other day, but that would be going too far for most. A first round substitute would be to let the brain slow down and even get bored a few hours a day. Unplug the listening devices, stop checking emails and texting on mobile devices etc.

We wear down our brain’s capacity to recharge just like throwing too many programs on your computer slow down the processing or the RAM.

Dopamine is the chemical energy of brain waves. In the right balance, everything is a pleasure. Foods that support dopamine are broccoli, carrots, egg whites, salmon, pomegranate juice, spinach, unsalted almonds,  green tea, flax seed, and certain supplements.

Acetylcholine is the chemical that powers the Alpha waves. Foods that support these waves are avocado, cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, nuts, milk products, luncheon meats, olive oil and salad dressings. Yes the brain needs the right fats to support optimum activity because it is about 60% fat; omega 3 fat mostly.

Wouldn’t it be great to know more? I suggest you invest some of the 5 Hour Energy Drink money into a book that would change your life by changing your awareness. If you could be 25% more productive each day and have more natural creative energy, what would that mean?

The more we manipulate energy the quicker we get burn out and exhaustion. The more we start to burn out the less effective we become.

I have read this book at least four times. It explains how to power the brain, meditate, and categorizes our personalities into 9 types. By understanding what our personalities filter, we can start opening up to more experiences that give us a better feel for reality.

Do We Want a Better Life or Not?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Mushroom Cloud
Image by Kevin Burkett via Flickr

We’ve heard the saying that doing more of the same gets the same results.

Boy, do I get tired of hearing people complain about the economy, the government, health care and you name it. The amount of time we focus on these issues does not actually change the outcomes; ever!

It only changes what we express and therefore what we are. We are what we express. A new definition.

I think we should start looking inward first to rediscover who we are. As a nation we are over weight and out of shape living on things that fungi won’t eat. You probably saw the publicity on the fact McDonald’s hamburgers won’t deteriorate.

Even though that seems funny, there are a lot of other things we eat that would also last months if left out in the open. When was the last time you were in the woods and saw an animal with a Bar B Q or a box of macaroni and cheese?

The closer we can get to eating raw, the close we get to who we are and our connection to the animal world and the earth that gave us life.  The more we can exercise our bodies, the happier we become and closer to the realization of what they are capable of if we really let them rip.

Then we start realizing that there might be other potential hidden in our subconscious that we have not discovered. Deep down we might get back to how we were in our first two years of life; pure happiness.

We might realize when we let the glitz fade away that we are closer to the animal kingdom than we want to acknowledge. When an animal is born like a cute puppy, does anyone ever say “You could be a really good dog if you could be a champion frisby catcher”?

No. We let the dog develop in its own born perfection to see what it will become. It is born perfect and it spends its days being loved and appreciated.

We should start with ourselves. We are born to be loved and appreciated and to love and appreciate.  Pretend your mission on earth is to express yourself in the most meaningful way you can enjoy. Pretend you are a human puppy.  This is your entitlement. Do you think God wanted you be a lawyer to fulfill his commandments?

We get caught up in our jobs, our possessions, societal problems and stop being the most basic human we were born to be. If everyone was enjoying their personal potential, we would be asking our leaders for different results.

Until we change as individuals, nothing will change

Time to Age and Refresh the American Experience

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
A tone mapped HDR image of a picnic setup on t...
Image via Wikipedia

Americans have always been seen as the nouveau riche. We were upstarts that left Mother England for independence of religion, royalty, and taxes.

We also left many traditions and life values of the European order in trade for glitzy consumerism. We really proved our mettle in the most recent mortgage crisis as we pro longed our profligate spending on the backs of our equity.

All that has changed as Wall Street leveraged our propensities into global chaos.

So let’s step back and step forward. Let’s re examine the European values for the simplicity of life.  A lawyer friend retired to the French countryside to sculpt and enjoy the milieu. He said the locals do not even acknowledge new comers for three years.

In travels through Austria I saw homes with the names of the families that lived in them posted on the front honoring them back into the 1700’s. Families often handed down homes for over a hundred years.

We have become a society that easily throws things away and treasures the new over the old. There is very little tradition and even our word and character have become of secondary importance to who we know and what we own.

As we are no longer nouveau riche, maybe our happiness needs to be more rooted in our humaneness. We need to step back in time to appreciate the value of human character and step forward in recreating our purpose for being on earth in the first place.

Getting in touch with ourselves on a deeper level becomes the foundation for understanding others at a deeper level. Deeper levels of understanding creates deeper levels of communication.

Face Book and Twitter and Texting can be seen as manifestations of a fear of deeper knowing. If we mistake these as real communications, we continue to perpetuate a shallowness that certainly hides life’s deeper purpose.

We have a great need to be social and connected, but they do not deliver happiness. In a sense we can become more estranged from ourselves in this mindless pursuit of building unlimited connections.

We need less busy time and more alone time appreciating our capabilities to express who we really are and finding values that have more personal significance. In our deeper levels of consciousness we can access some very valuable insights into the real meaning of the human spirit.

Let’s not be confused by the value of creating business relationships with real life relationships.  Having followers isn’t tantamount to experiencing life. Maybe Americans could step back by slowing down and move forward in creating real relationship with themselves, others, and their environment.

Common Sense Weight Loss over Promises

Common Sense Weight Loss over Promises

Everyone loves a short cut. Computers even allow you to short cut a file by putting it on your desktop so you don’t have to open your documents file. My kids always wanted me to park close to the stores in a shopping center so they didn’t have to walk.

It is only natural that in the desire to weigh less, we would like to find someone with the magic pill that doesn’t require real effort.

One of the problems in the modern era is that we have genetic make up of 500 to 1000 generations depending on which part of the globe your ancestors hailed from. During most of this period of time there were not super markets and food was often scarce.

The body learned how to protect the internal organs and then the balance of the body. Storing fat was the like you establishing a 401K; security for the future. Now in just a few of the last generations, fat is no longer fashionable.

The body has to be trained to ignore the genetic code and some dieticians will say tricked when you reduce calories. Your metabolism works on the reptilian brain level where less food means danger.

James at Body for Wife.com can explain in tedious detail how many calories an exercise burns and therefore where your intake has to fall to get negative. I have never liked counting calories or quick fad diets. Up until a certain age of 35, I could hold my own by exercising.

This is an easy battle to lose. When I was running 60 miles a week with a citizens (regular people) track group, the weight fell off, but only to a certain level. It was good for ten pounds, but most people wouldn’t trade that exercise for ten pounds.

I have since learned, exercise has little to do with weight loss for most people because even I can’t exercise enough now to make a difference. I exercise almost every day by running on the beach and surfing.

Counting calories is torture and ruins life. I would much prefer to follow a diet that I like and can take off pounds to a weight that I can sustain. Over the last four years I have gravitated to a cleaner healthier regimen of more fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and lean protein. I have dropped flour, sugar, and bad fats.

I have dropped about ten pounds a year, eaten plenty, and do not have to worry about the weight coming back.  My new life style meets my desire to eat plenty, feel better, get trimmer and not get sick.

In these posts, I have explained my diet and will continue to do so, but your commitment has to be that you want to be leaner for life and you are willing to change your life style to do it.

My diet is too narrow and uninteresting for most people who eat like regular Americans now, so I have recommended Isabel de los Rios’ program which is well explained on this page and offers lots of recipes that most people would find tantalizing.

The Biggest Problem in Losing Weight

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Soda... A Forgotten Food Group

People don’t want to change their life style, they just want to weigh less.

If you want to weigh less for the rest of your life, you can’t live like you do now.

You have to permanently change the way you eat.

A lot of people will knock off the cheeseburgers, desserts and soda for a month and then go back to their old routine.

If you want to weigh less each year and maintain it, you have to refine your eating habits. I think it has to be done a little at a time or it won’t hold. You never have to eat right more than 85% of the time. You will bolt from anything too rigid.

You need to have some basic food groups. Over four or five years I have gone from eating everything to eating a very narrow clean diet that most people could not adopt immediately.

I have gone from a meat eater to one that eats little meat. In fact the only meat I have daily is canned tuna. I have eliminated for the most part, sugar, flour, and fried food. I would still eat meat, I just don’t.

You have to build from the basics and try to eliminate the foods to which you feel addicted. I try to eliminate the bad foods to which I feel addicted by finding satisfying substitutes. Keep trying to break addictions with substitutes.  After a while it is easy. But you only have to eat right 85% of the time. That’s your relief valve.

You need vegetables, fruits, and protein. You can use a minimum of grains and nuts.

If you can build a diet with these basics and include the foods you have to have you will have a good basis. Try to start eliminating foods not in these basic low calorie, low fat groups.

Don’t starve. In fact, munching every few hours helps the process. I find smoothies very satisfying and I can put what ever I want into the mix. Salads are satisfying and you can add chicken, tuna, or even meat. Eventually you will make them leaner. I usually add half a can of tuna to my salads.

I like omelets because eggs are healthy and a great source of protein. I might have one in the morning, or for lunch, and yes even after my salad dinner. Protein helps you speed up your metabolism, is good for your thinking, and is always better than a flour dessert.

Start thinking lean and improve each month. Turn your diet upside down every month and it will remain interesting and your body responds by burning more calories.

Eating healthier is a process that leads to less body weight, a leaner look, freedom from sickness, easier exercise, and better self esteem. In a gradual process, build toward the basic food groups in as raw a form as possible.

Change your eating, change your life. You do become what you eat.

I like people continuously telling me, wow you look leaner or you have lost a lot of weight. I like loose fitting clothes. I like my body not spending time digesting or never having an upset stomach. I am never saying, wow I ate too much. I am never sick. The leaner I get the better I can exercise. It just keeps getting better.

**

If you want a great source of raw foods and healthy snacks that are good addiction breakers visit http://NutsonLine.com I order chia seeds and maca powder for my smoothies. They tell you the ingredients and health benefits of the their raw powders, seeds, and other foods.

Lose Weight Fast Without Starving

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

A very active and lean friend of mine once told me we don’t need as much as we eat.

Over the years I have increasingly found that to be true. My most dangerous period is after dinner and before I go to sleep. I have continuously looked for more harmless food for this period of time than I would like to eat. Try to avoid the chips,  ice  cream, cookies and so forth that sound good..

I have also found that vigorous activity in the morning levels my blood sugar so that I am not as hungry during the day. I have also evolved to a diet of minimum sugar, flour, grease, and bad fats.

What do I eat? I love a fruit smoothie in the morning. In fact one of my routines is a few smoothies with only juice, water, milk, peanut butter, a protein supplement and a banana. One some days I might have 6 glasses until dinner with only half a tuna melt for lunch, if necessary.

For dinner I will have a good vegetable salad. After dinner I will have a small dessert. Then before bed I need something like cereal or oatmeal.

On a different routine I will start with my coffee and two glasses of smoothie. Then I will have an egg, milk, and cheese omelet around 10 a.m. Then a half a tuna melt for lunch and a salad for dinner.

It is very important to change up the routine every three or four weeks. I filter in a variety of snacks that are harmless and I keep changing them so that I don’t get addicted to any one of them. I find by changing them I can keep evolving to less harmless snacks.

If you have noticed, I don’t have much cooked meat in this diet. I have very little alcohol. My tastes have evolved over time to that which is healthy and away from that which is harmful.

The benefits are I am never starved,  my brain works better because I am not using energy to digest, I feel better, and I never get sick.

I keep working as much exercise into my routine as I can handle. The diet is more important than the exercise. This is an easy process to blow off that ten pounds that have been plaguing you. Over the last four years I have lost 30 pounds from a high of 220 pounds and am continuing toward my high school weight of 175 pounds.  Since I have moved to the beach in May, I have lost ten pounds. As long as I keep refining my diet I can continue to lose pounds without  ever starving.

Achievement and Happiness on the Same Train

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Our culture has rarely treated these goals as issues on two different trains, but it should.

Achievement is usually the priority and happiness is the result; one is achieved before we get to realize the other.

This has two big assumptions:

  • Happiness has to wait
  • We will achieve the goals that will make us happy

We could be working on them simultaneously and even make happiness the priority. Achievement is usually the result of effort and time. Happiness is more an acceptance of who we are and why we are here.

From the time we are young, we have sponsors guiding our achievement activities. Our parents, teachers, coaches, bosses, and peers give us plenty of guidance on what we should be doing to be successful.

Rarely does anyone treat happiness as a separate issue. We are happy when we are born. Left to our own resources we would only pursue things that made us happy. Somehow duty and obligation become priorities over our own selfish pursuits.

If we were inspired by recognition of our opportunity on earth to express who we are, we might pursue our dream and every thing else would be second in priority.

If we recognize that we are connected to mother nature in the circle, hierarchy, and chain of life we might appreciate our role and opportunity to be who we are.

The desire for achievement often trumps the realization that in the large picture our achievements don’t mean much. If we connect to the larger picture of our short time on earth and our capacity for love, inspiration, sharing, expression, and appreciation, we can have a different view.

The fortunate opportunity to do both exists. We can appreciate being here and achieve to provide what we need to flourish.  The more we get the two to work together the more both will benefit.

Life Can Be Simpler and Happier

Most of us feel we have been downsized in the last few years.

I notice a few prevalent mind sets.

The most noticeable is how people with assets have lost the security they had anticipated and relied upon. There may no longer be the cushion that would have ensured at least more security for the future.

The other prevalent mind set is the fear of losing a job, not getting a job, or not having enough income to sustain a current life style.

One interesting economic opinion I read was that the U.S. is trying to prop up the economy long enough for people to get used to a lower standard of living. I think this is a little cynical, but the long term outcome may be realistic.

The global economy has been altered; maybe permanently. The dreams most people had for future happiness that depended on economics have been altered.  It may be time to seek new realities.

Resistance to change will determine whether it is a welcome or unwelcome transition.

A while ago I had come to new realizations about happiness and possessions. I found that after I had purchased most everything I wanted, there was no additional long term happiness as a result.

Happiness is a state of mind created about our satisfaction with who we are and our opportunity to share our love and self expression with the people we know and the life we have.

Security is the ability to live within our means which for most people now means having less.  I found that I could start investing more time in discovering my personal potential to live healthier, support those close to me, express myself,  connect with the earth and nature, and find happiness.

The more time I spent investing in my personal development, the less I needed things to make me happy. The first step is to drop a compulsion to acquire the newest and the latest. A second step is to reorient a satisfaction of upsizing everything to downsizing everything.

Happiness is easier found by creating time to be with ourselves and not be distracted by outside forces. If we find our selves through exercise, connecting with our planet, getting healthier, expressing our selves personally, and determining how we can better support others, we leave the ego centricity that demands more rather than less.

Life can be happier and simpler.  When we focus on improving who we are instead of what we have, the new focus delivers more satisfaction and security.

Our Loss of Personal Responsibility is Our Weakness

Would you say that 90% of the chatter in the air is complaints that we are not being taken care of?

The government, the regulators, the health care industry, the President, the political parties, the Chinese, OPEC and so forth have let us down or are taking what should be ours.

Why would we spend a trillion dollars on healthcare when we could take care of ourselves with a minimum of effort?

Dr. Maring, 64, a gynecologist and obstetrician with three decades as a surgeon, says”… that in the health professions, the kitchen must become as crucial as the clinic. Food is at the center of health and illness.”

Do we really have to tell people that diet and exercise keeps the doctor away? Do you know how many people never need a doctor? Lots of people.

“Financiers send the world into recession and don’t seem to suffer. Neighbors take on huge mortgages and then just walk away when they go underwater. Washington politicians avoid living within their means. Federal agencies fail and get rewarded with more responsibilities.

What the country is really looking for is a restoration of responsibility. If some smart leader is going to help us get out of ideological gridlock, that leader will reframe politics around this end.”  David Brooks NYTimes

The public in a sense has put everyone over a barrel because they make irresponsible decisions and want to hold everyone accountable. The melt down crisis is partly to blame on people who borrowed too much because it was available.

There are so many regulations protecting people from teachers, doctors, financial regulations, businesses, transportation companies and so forth that innovation is stifled from too much regulation.

It is all because people won’t be responsible for them selves and fear everyone is out to get them.

If we really want freedom, we have to take on more responsibility.

It has to start with each one of us willing to be accountable for what we do.

Individuals have lost control of their lives because individuals are afraid to be responsible for their decisions.

We have to make smart decisions that may require deliberation, comparison, and consultation.  Errors and omission insurance costs us a fortune every year because everyone has to have it to do business.

It also keeps people from going into business. If you open a knitting shop and don’t have insurance, you could lose everything you own. Think about it.

The New Age Needs the New Man and Woman

Superman (comic book)

We seem to be circled by limitations as our potential increases.

What I mean is that the economy seems to restrict our growth.

Businesses are slow to reach into new opportunities.

Job descriptions become narrower and less lucrative.

And yet technology, social connection, information access, device capacity and speed are increasing geometrically. I mentioned yesterday that the one gigabyte internet speed arising increases current broadband speed by 200 times.

Why such discord and how do we move against the grain?

Two different paths crossed. The never ending innovation in technology crossed the path of the greedy unregulated financial system. The global reduction of 50% of equity and capital created a severe cramp in consumerism.

It’s like having hotel set up a giant banquet table but you can’t get in because the door is locked.

The key for your future growth is personal development.

The institutions that we depended upon to act as partners have stopped working together.  The banks, corporations, and government are at odds over trying to both stimulate new growth and protecting from a melt down happening again.

Taxes, regulation, and finance are a mess and working counter productively.

The fourth institution, the individual, is on his own.

What is needed in this new era?

It seems college educations have little currency.  Millions of people are unemployed that have great experience.  Skill sets that were previously dependable to provide a living are no longer needed.

The first personal characteristic necessary is resolve. There are unlimited obstacles to growth even though there is increased capacity to perform.

A second characteristic is flexibility. What ever it is you think you were training for or skills you have developed have to be reconciled with what is in demand.

A third ability necessary is to spot the niches that can serve the current blocked pathways using the increased capacity. Every single institution has the need for increased revenues and to reduce expenses.

To become more efficient, businesses must fire people, make existing employees work harder, or outsource work to more efficient third parties.

Third parties can perform labor, can work with data, can create marketing, can sell as a partner or affiliate, can consult on problems in every department, can train, can provide short term services as needed, can manage, and can create product or services that can be sold.

Inspiration can lead to maximizing the one area of endeavor you want to provide. Inspiration creates the necessary determination and commitment to find a place for your skill. Inspiration creates the activity that is fulfilling while you are working toward success.

The institutions have let us down. It is up to us to become our own institution.
